Kermitt Brooks
Kermitt J. Brooks is Chief Legal Officer of The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America (Guardian). In his role, he leads legal, compliance, corporate governance, and government affairs. Kermitt’s extensive legal experience allows him to play a pivotal role in shaping the regulatory landscape of the insurance industry.
Previously, Kermitt served as the Senior Executive Director and General Counsel at Equitable Life Insurance Company. In this role he was responsible for the legal, regulatory, compliance, and government relations functions and was a member of the Management Committee of Equitable Holdings, Inc. Prior to being appointed General Counsel, he served as Deputy General Counsel of Equitable, where he managed an array of complex state insurance and federal securities matters.
Earlier in his career, Kermitt served as First Deputy Superintendent and Acting Superintendent for the New York State Insurance Department. He also served as Deputy Attorney General for Operations at the New York State Office of Attorney General.
He is an active board member of several industry and non-profit organizations. He is currently President of Association of Life Insurance Counsel, Chair of the Life Insurance Council of New York, member of the Federal Advisory Committee on Insurance (FACI) and is a board member of the National Organization of Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Association, the American Red Cross (Greater New York Region), and Michigan State University Foundation.
Kermitt received his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School, where he was a contributing editor of the Michigan Law Review, and a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from James Madison College at Michigan State University.
